Why Costs Keep Rising
Since January 2025, costs in the United States have continued to rise — especially for essentials like food, energy, utilities, and healthcare.
-
Trump’s tariffs increased prices by adding a tax on imported goods, which businesses then passed on to consumers. Immediately affected were food, clothing, electronics, cars, appliances, construction, and furniture.
-
Congress passed a sweeping tax-and-spending law in 2025 that cut taxes primarily for the wealthy. It reduced funding for food assistance and Medicaid, and made health insurance more expensive and harder for many people to obtain.
- The war in Iran disrupted the global oil supply, pushing up the cost of gas and household utilities.
